Wihuri Oy Aarnio’s Metro wholesale will stop selling eggs laid by caged hens by 2025
Wihuri’s Metro wholesale has decided to stop selling eggs laid by hens in enriched cages by 2025. The decision supports the Group’s goal of increasing responsible and sustainable solutions in our product and service range. The commitment applies to all business conducted by Wihuri’s Metro wholesale.
The policy applies to all eggs and egg products in Wihuri’s Metro wholesale selection, and it will be implemented in stages. We will start the process by adding Metro Free-range Eggs to our product selection in the autumn of 2019. We will look into expanding the policy to our Own Brand food products in 2020, negotiating with suppliers to determine a schedule for ceasing to use enriched cage eggs in these products as well. We will report on the progress of this objective as part of our goal-oriented responsibility work. We will also inform you of the more detailed timetable regarding the expansion of the policy to concern eggs used as ingredients in our Own Brand food products.
The commitment was made in cooperation with the operators and stakeholders involved in the value chain. “We value our cooperation with different operators, and we have received valuable information from suppliers, producers, and animal rights organizations,” says Janne Sokajärvi, Procurement and Logistics Director at Wihuri Oy Aarnio’s Metro wholesale. “We hope to continue our cooperation also in the future. We will monitor the realization of our goal and are ready to refine it, provided that the market conditions and the availability of responsibly produced eggs allow it,” Sokajärvi continues.
