We are responsibly and care for people, the environment and the economy. Responsible policies and the measures related to them are part of our strategy, the aim of which is to be the most reliable partner in the Finnish wholesale business.


In our materiality analysis, the key responsibility issues for our business and interest groups were profitable operations that are in line with our values (financial responsibility), product safety and traceability (social responsibility), and employee well-being (social responsibility).

Wihuri's Metro wholesale is involved in the national Society's Commitment to Sustainable Development. We are committed to strengthening the competence of our staff in our responsible practices. We have organized corporate responsibility training for all personnel in 2016 and onwards, always when receiving new employees. We are promoting our staff's well-being by developing the safety and operational practices of the working environment.

“The Finland We Want by 2050” commitment, coordinated by the Ministry of Environment, has already been signed by nearly 250 operators. These operators include several other trade associations and government actors.

Wihuri has joined the FIBS Corporate Responsibility Network and also the FIBS Diversity Charter that operates under it. FIBS (Finnish Business & Society) helps its members to develop more profitable and sustainable business both for the company and the society at large.

We promote diversity by increasing awareness and visibility of the equal opportunities, rights and treatment that belong to everyone. Financial responsibility

The aim of all our operations is to achieve our strategic objectives of profitability, which allows us to develop our operations, investments and employment in the long term. This year, we are developing tools for product management and sales, which we will use to reinforce our product selection work, price competitiveness and reliability of order fulfilment.

Social responsibility

We are responsible for the quality, safety and origin of the products we acquire. We require that the principles of legislation and responsibility have been complied with in their production. Our aim is to improve transparency and responsible actions throughout the entire food supply chain, as well as the traceability of products.
    We promote the well-being of our employees with an open and good work community, as well as with opportunities for training. We support our employees in developing their professional skills by offering them training that can lead to a vocational degree, and also with tool and software training.

Environmental responsibility

We strive to prevent adverse environmental impacts in all of our actions. The key measures for this are reducing emissions caused by transportation and reducing our properties' energy consumption, as well as minimizing the amount of waste generated by our operations and enhancing our recycling process. We develop new operational models in the long term to minimize environmental impact.

Risk management

Risk management is part of Metro's responsibility. We try to anticipate potential risks and make sure that our operations run smoothly even in case of disturbances. The aim of risk management is to support our strategic operations and strengthen our ability to develop new business functions. Risk identification and timely measures increase our stakeholders' confidence in our operations.

The Supply Chain Initiative

Metro complies with good practice in all of its operations. The European Commission and the European organisations for the food supply chain agreed on The Supply Chain Initiative (Principles of Good Practice) in 2011 and Wihuri Group committed to it in April 2013. The Supply Chain Initiative aims at providing a framework for doing business that respects contractual freedom and ensures competitiveness, trust and continuity. The aim is to prove the functionality of the food supply chain, promoting best practices, competitiveness and transparency.
